Quake 4 mod for Quake 1

Infernal Stroggos Mod is a free-to-use mod created by TheMrBenpulido for the classic action shooter Quake. This is basically a retro recreation of its far sequel, Quake 4, made for the port of the original 1996 game. You follow the original Quake Ranger as you try to retake the alien world of Stroggos

However, instead of mechanical monsters, Infernal Stroggos Mod pits you against demons instead. This makes the game both familiar and new, even to fans of the franchise. While you're at it, you might also want to check out the Quake Champions video game.

Retake Stroggos all over again

Infernal Stroggos Mod explains its premise as an alternate time and dimension when the planet of Stroggos–inhabited by mechanical monsters in the original Quake 4 game–is now filled with demons as with the first Quake. This mix-up makes for a refreshing experience, with content drawing from both games and rebuilding them on the classic Quake engine. Players even get to face Shub-Niggurat once more, although in a different pit.

There are a lot of changes in the game that makes it hard to distinguish between the first and the fourth main entries, making it feel original. For example, the console interface is overhauled. Also, the game screen looks largely different. Although it retains the same pixelated graphics, the color is obviously brighter and more vivid compared to the first Quake game.

However, players report a few issues with this mod. The first is that it shares similarities with the Arcade Dimension, Quake Epsilon, and the Quoth mods. Although there have been similar attempts to recreate Quake 4 on the first entry, this one makes minor visual and gameplay improvements to those that preceded it. Aside from that, minor graphics glitches don’t diminish the gameplay value in any way.

A good port for an older engine

Overall, the Infernal Stroggos Mod makes good use of previous concepts and successfully builds upon them. It manages to recreate Quake 4 in the original engine, yet makes graphics and gameplay improvements to cater to fans of either game. With this mismatch of familiar enemies and environments, the mod manages to give players an all-new experience. All these factors make this custom add-on a must-try.
